None of it was enough to save his father. Then a boy called Rusty stops him on the way to school and asks him to close his eyes. What happens next involves red sand, a god with a tree growing out of his head, and a promise Harlen says out loud. Hrehaan Ahuja was eight when he wrote it, after standing under a New Zealand dark sky reserve and working out how few other places there are for any of us to go.
